The city Khajuraho got its name from dates which referred to as Khajur in Hindi because when the Chandela dynasty collapsed in the 13th century, dense palm trees covered the temples for a long stretch of time.
Renowned for an assembly of Jain and Hindu temples, Khajuraho is a tiny town with around 20,000 people, situated in the heart of India, that is the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh.
Declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO, the Khajuraho temples’ sensuous and erotic carvings and sculptures prove to be a delight for all tourists visiting the beautiful monument! Constructed during the rule of the Chandela dynasty between 950 to 1050 A.D. the Khajuraho temples were originally a group of 85 temples.

For someone who studies or loves architecture, Khajuraho is the best place to go over to.
The Khajuraho temples expand to over 9 square miles area and portray the conventional lifestyle of the ladies during the medieval period. Only 25 out of the original 85 temples remain now.
These temples are fascinating to look at, thanks to the intricate sculptures, and mindboggling carvings inscribed on them, and they also represent the kind of life people had way back in the 11th century.
The temples illustrate both Hinduism and Jainism where the deities are made out of sandstones, with shades of pale yellow, pink and buff.
You’d be flabbergasted to notice that the walls and pillars of Khajuraho temples have erotic sculptures that depict Kama sutra, and have some of the unique designs carved on them. You’d also find sculptures that portray spiritual teachings, meditation, wrestling, kinship, and royalty.
The Indo-Aryan architecture with Nagara style also reveals the open-mindedness and passion for The love of the people living during the Chandela dynasty.
You’d get to see a number of sexual positions which are extraordinary pieces of art carved on the temples at Khajuraho. 10% of the works of art are raunchy and sensual. The intimate carvings have been said to be tantric sexual practices by some scholars.
Some believe the carvings of the love-making couples depict the Hindu belief of sex being an inseparable and indispensable part of human life.
The sculptures have been so intricately chiselled that you’d be dumbfounded to witness such fine art! You may also feel sorry how you’ve not tried such wild sexual positions yourself that the people living in ancient India already have!
You also shouldn’t miss the light and sound show that’s held at the Western group of temples every day in the evening. The program is hosted by none other than the Bollywood celebrity Shri Amitabh Bachchan. Indians have to pay Rs. 120 for entry while foreigners have to shell out Rs. 400 for the same.
You are advised to hire private cars or bikes to roam around the city for Khajuraho temple trip because the buses are generally crowded and would obviously suck up more of your travel time.
Foreigners would not face language problems during a Khajuraho tour as most of the tourist guides are well-versed in English, French and Dutch too.
For Indians, Hindi is widely spoken across the town, so there shouldn’t be any problem. Also, the climate that one would witness in Khajuraho is that of an extreme nature whereby summers are extremely hot, whilst winters are very pleasant.
Thus it is evident and one of the things you should remember is that winter is the best time to visit Khajuraho. You could also visit in March because you’d get to watch the annual dance festival that goes on at that time.
A Khajuraho trip is a MUST for everyone at least once in their lifetime.
